A low-pressure warning on a Tesla in San Diego is a money question as much as a tire question. Tesla Roadside Assistance, your insurer, a membership plan, and a local operator can each send a different bill. Confirm every line in writing before anyone starts work.
Confirm Tesla’s current flat-tire roadside terms
Open the Tesla app first. Tesla’s own roadside page tells owners to request help there, not from a random tow number you found on the shoulder. Tesla also says out-of-range assistance may be available, and that it is not financially covered. Availability can be restricted case by case for safety or regulatory reasons. That is the verified baseline as of September 12, 2026, from Tesla Roadside Assistance.
Charge Pro SD could not confirm a published Tesla flat-tire fee, a $99 roadside line, a complimentary patch price, or a mileage cap for tire work on that page. Older invoices, forum posts, and insurance blogs are not Tesla’s current rate card. If a $99 charge from Tesla shows up on a screen or a text, ask Tesla what that line is for before you approve it.
Ask four things in the app while you are still parked:
- Is this visit covered, billed to you, or mixed.
- Is the plan a repair, a replacement, a tow, or a decline.
- Who is coming: Tesla, a contractor, or a tire shop.
- If the car has to move, where it is allowed to go.
Those answers change the bill more than the nail does. A covered tow to a Tesla Service Center is not the same invoice as an on-site plug. A declined tire job with a paid tow is a third shape. Our how much is Tesla roadside assistance page is the broader cost map. This page is only the flat-tire verification path.
San Diego location changes the ask. A slow leak in a Mission Valley garage is a different dispatch than a shredded tire in a live lane on I-5 through Torrey Pines. On I-8 through El Cajon and Alpine, summer pavement heat can take a soft tire from driveable to destroyed in a few miles. Coastal I-5 through Encinitas is cooler, and a slow leak can look calmer than it is. Inland SR-67 toward Ramona is the opposite: heat, grade, and fewer tire shops with Tesla-size inventory.
If the car is in a traffic lane or another dangerous spot, California Highway Patrol says to call 911. In metropolitan areas, other roadside requests can go through 511 by saying “Roadside Assistance.” That is a safety path, not a Tesla price. It does not freeze Tesla’s tire terms.
Do not treat Tesla roadside assistance for a flat tire as a quote. That page is about service type. This one is about what you still have to verify on cost.
Ask what a written charge includes
A spoken range is not a bill. Ask for a written estimate before anyone jacks the car, plugs the tire, or loads it. Charge Pro SD does not set operator prices and does not publish a Tesla tire menu. Tesla’s roadside page, as captured for our claims ledger, also does not publish a public rate card for Tesla roadside assistance tire repair.
If Tesla or a contractor sends a total, split it. Ask which lines are dispatch, labor, the tire or patch, shop supplies, tax, wheel or TPMS work, and a second trip if the first tire is not in the truck. Ask whether a matching tire is even on the truck. One tire in Mira Mesa and three more “later” is two visits, not one.
Ask whether the visit is Tesla Mobile Service, Tesla Roadside, or a third-party tow. Those labels are not interchangeable on an invoice. Mobile service that replaces a tire at your driveway in Carmel Valley is a parts-and-labor ticket. A contracted flatbed from the I-15 shoulder in Escondido is a transport ticket, then a shop ticket. Mixing them in your head is how a “simple flat” becomes two payments.
The U.S. Department of Energy publishes charging and vehicle basics. It does not publish Tesla tire-service prices. Neither does the California Energy Commission. If someone quotes a “typical San Diego Tesla flat fee,” treat it as unverified unless Tesla or the shop puts it on paper with today’s date.
Write down the VIN, tire size on the door sticker, which corner is down, and whether you already drove on it. Driven-flat damage is often the line that kills a cheap repair. Ask the writer of the estimate to say, in writing, whether they inspected the inner casing. A photo of a nail is not that inspection.
If the total is only a dollar figure with no line items, send it back. You need enough detail to compare Tesla, your insurer, and an independent shop. You also need enough detail to dispute a charge later. Charge Pro SD cannot see Tesla’s internal billing. Only Tesla, the shop, and your card issuer can.
Separate tire repair from a full replacement
Repair and replacement are different products. Coverage for one often does not cover the other. Ask the person on scene to say which one they are selling you.
A small tread puncture can be a plug or a proper internal patch, then a slow drive to a shop. A sidewall cut, a blowout, a bent wheel, or a tire driven flat long enough to cook the casing is usually replacement, plus a possible tow. Sealant in an acoustic-foam Tesla tire can also make a later repair messier. That is a condition to disclose, not a DIY plan.
Charge Pro SD could not verify a current Tesla-published price to patch a tire or to replace one. Shop anecdotes that name a labor fee or a per-tire dollar amount are not ledger facts, so they stay off this page. Your number is the written estimate for your size, your model year, and today’s inventory.
Ask three inventory questions that matter in this county:
- Does this shop have your exact size today, including load rating and Tesla-spec construction.
- If they have one tire, will they force a pair or a set, and what does that add.
- If Kearny Mesa is out, is El Cajon, Chula Vista, or Oceanside actually holding the same tire, or only a close size.
Coastal North County and East County do not share the same shelf. A Model Y size that is sitting in a Kearny Mesa bay may not be sitting in Alpine. A Model S performance tire is a narrower hunt than a common Model 3 size. Confirm stock before you approve a tow destination. A cheap tow to a shop with no tire is a second tow.
If the car has run-flat tires, say so in the first message. Run-flat construction changes whether a plug is even on the table, and it changes how far you can limp. Do not assume every Tesla in San Diego is on the same tire type. Read the sidewall and the door sticker.
Replacement can also pull in alignment, a second tire for stagger or wear match, and a wheel if the rim took the pothole. Those are separate yes/no lines. Approve them one at a time.
Check insurance or membership before you pay
Pay the last payer, not the first person who arrives. Tesla Roadside, auto-insurance emergency road service, a club membership, and any wheel-and-tire product are separate contracts. They overlap in a flat. They are not one pot of money.
GEICO’s Emergency Roadside Service page, verified September 13, 2026, lists tire changes with a working spare, towing to the nearest qualified repair facility with mileage limits, jump starts, lockout with a dollar cap for covered causes, winching near a publicly maintained roadway, and fuel delivery with fuel cost excluded. Coverage varies by state. The policy contract is the mileage number. That page does not list on-site EV pack charging. If your Tesla has no working spare, a “tire change with spare” benefit may not do what you think. Confirm the spare wording on your declarations page before you promise the adjuster a cheap swap.
If you drive for Uber and hold Gold, Platinum, or Diamond rewards, Uber Help describes complimentary Urgent.ly roadside up to three times on a rolling 365-day basis from first use. Listed services include tire changes, jump start, fuel delivery, lockout, winching, and towing up to 25 miles. Confirm live eligibility in the Driver app. Do not assume a Tesla-sized tire is on that truck.
Charge Pro SD could not verify Tesla Wheel & Tire Protection terms in the approved claims ledger. If you bought that product, open the contract in the Tesla app or your email and read the repair-versus-replacement rules yourself. Do not treat a roadside dispatch as proof that the tire bill is prepaid.
Club memberships and other insurers each have their own spare rules, tow-mile caps, and reimbursement forms. Ask whether they pay the shop directly or reimburse you later. A reimbursement plan means you still need a card on scene. Save the written estimate, the final invoice, photos of the puncture, and the Tesla app request log.
Tesla’s high-voltage Battery and Drive Unit Limited Warranty is not a tire policy. For Model S and Model X sold by Tesla, that PDF describes 8 years or 150,000 miles, whichever first, with a minimum 70% battery capacity retention. For Model 3 and Model Y Standard or Standard Range Plus, it is 8 years or 100,000 miles. For Model 3 and Model Y Long Range or Performance, it is 8 years or 120,000 miles. VIN-specific terms in the Tesla app still control, and that PDF does not cover Cybertruck. None of those figures is a flat-tire price.
When a matched local operator may still fit
Tesla is one path, not the only path. Tesla says out-of-range help may be available and is not financially covered. Tesla also says roadside can be restricted for safety or regulatory reasons. If Tesla declines the tire, quotes a tow you do not want, or cannot take the job where you are, you still need the car off the lane.
Charge Pro SD is a referral service for San Diego County. It matches you with licensed, independent local operators. It does not repair tires, own a truck, set prices, or promise an arrival window. The operator you are connected with confirms the make, model, model year, tire size, port, symptoms, location, proposed service, price, and timing before the job is accepted.
That is the point of Tesla roadside rescue when the car is a Tesla and you need a local operator in the loop. Broader emergency EV roadside assistance is the same idea when the next step is recovery, a safe drop, or a charge after the car has sat. Ask the operator to put labor, parts, and transport on separate lines, the same way you asked Tesla.
A matched operator still fits when the tire is the problem and Tesla is not the payer: after warranty roadside terms no longer apply to the visit you need, when you want a shop that actually has the size, or when you are already in a driveway in Chula Vista or a lot in Sorrento Valley and you only need a written local estimate. It also fits when the car cannot move and you need the next safe step, not a guess about Tesla inventory.
Stay out of live traffic while you sort the money. Call 911 if the Tesla is in a lane. Then get the written charge, then pick the payer.
