Why won’t my GMC Hummer EV start?
A no-start on a Hummer EV is a dead 12V battery until you prove otherwise. The 12V runs the low-voltage electronics that boot the truck and bridge it to the high-voltage Ultium pack. If the 12V can’t hold enough voltage, that handshake never completes, so nothing turns on even though the main battery is fine.
The usual triggers are the same as any EV: a truck parked for weeks that slowly drained the 12V, or a 12V battery that’s simply worn out. Either way you get the same result, a dark cabin and a truck that won’t wake up. A jump gets you moving again, but a 12V near the end of its life will strand you again within days.
The “conditions unable to shift” error
Hummer EV owners commonly see a “conditions unable to shift” message, sometimes with other electrical warnings stacked on top of it. GMC’s own spec puts a resting 12V battery at 12.4 to 12.8 volts and a running 12V system at 14.4 to 14.8 volts. Anything below that resting range causes exactly this kind of electrical confusion, shifting errors, screens that won’t load, or a truck that just refuses to wake up.
Don’t keep cycling the truck through this. Bringing the 12V back into its normal voltage range with a jump or a charge is what actually clears these errors. Restarting the infotainment system over and over doesn’t fix a battery that’s too weak to hold voltage under load.
Where the 12V battery lives, and the door-window problem
GMC put the Hummer EV’s 12V battery in the front trunk, what GMC calls the eTrunk, on the passenger side under a plastic cover held on by three tabs. Straightforward enough with power. The complication is what happens everywhere else on the truck once that battery goes flat.
The Hummer EV’s power doors use an indexing feature: the window drops slightly the moment you open the door, then rises back to full height as the door closes, so the glass never contacts the roof seal at an angle. That indexing needs 12V power to run. With the battery dead, it doesn’t happen, and if you close the door the way you normally would, the top of the window can strike the sky panel or the A-pillar trim and chip or crack. Treat every door as manual until the 12V is jumped: ease it shut slowly and don’t let momentum finish the swing.
Opening the eTrunk with a dead 12V
The eTrunk release is electric, so a dead 12V also means no push-button frunk access, the same lockout problem Porsche Taycan owners run into with their frunk. GMC built a mechanical workaround for it. In the driver’s footwell, to the left of the brake pedal and up behind the wiring harness, there’s a silver wire with a loop at the end. Pull that loop until you feel it give, and you’ll hear the eTrunk release. It takes some feel to find on the first try since it’s tucked behind other wiring, but it works with zero electrical power involved.
Once the eTrunk is open, lift the plastic battery cover using its three tabs to expose the 12V battery and its terminals.
Jump terminals and how to safely wake it
With the cover off, you’ll see two terminals. The positive terminal sits under a red sliding door you flip open to clamp onto. The negative terminal is to the left of it, next to a green connector, and takes the negative clamp the same way any 12V jump would. Connect positive to positive first, then negative to the ground terminal, and give it a minute before trying to power the truck on.
